Extension of IGP Yohuno’s tenure shows NDC cannot be trusted – NPP Communicator

Bugase condemned the government’s action as a complete reversal of its earlier stance on post-retirement contracts.

Francis Bugase, a communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, has strongly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he describes as a betrayal of public trust following the two-year contract extension granted to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

President John Mahama, acting on the recommendation of the Police Council, approved the extension to allow the IGP to continue in office beyond his statutory retirement in December 2025. The decision, according to government sources, aims to ensure continuity, stability, and the consolidation of ongoing reforms within the Ghana Police Service.

However, speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, November 28, Bugase condemned the government’s action as a complete reversal of its earlier stance on post-retirement contracts.

“The NDC came to power in January 2025. On April 2, the government issued a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, suspending all post-retirement contracts for public servants and directing all departments and agencies to comply. And today, not even half a year has passed, and we are discussing the contract extension of an IGP.” He stated.

Bugase argued that the extension exposes what he described as inconsistency and lack of credibility on the part of the NDC administration.

“This contract extension shows a lack of trust, transparency, justice, and fairness. It denies opportunities to the youth and ultimately undermines our security services.” He said.

He urged the government to uphold the commitments it makes to the public and not take the trust of Ghanaians for granted.
