Kassena Nankana Municipal NADMO Director calls for community cooperation to prevent disasters

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Samuel Aboko, has appealed to residents, particularly community members, to cooperate with NADMO officers in efforts to prevent disasters in the municipality.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, January 15, Aboko said lack of cooperation from some community members continues to pose a major challenge to the organisation’s sensitisation efforts.
According to him, zonal coordinators who visit communities to educate residents on disaster prevention are sometimes met with resistance.
“Sometimes our zonal coordinators visit certain communities, but some people are not willing to listen to them. They even drive them away, saying they have come to educate without bringing relief items.” He said.
Aboko stressed that community sensitisation is a critical component of disaster management, as it helps address the causes of disasters and promotes preventive measures to reduce their occurrence and impact.
Touching on concerns about the inadequate supply of relief items during disasters, the Municipal Director attributed the situation to logistical and resource constraints.
“The challenge is that we do not have adequate resources. We depend largely on the limited support from government and, occasionally, assistance from NGOs. That is what we can distribute to affected persons.” He explained.
He noted that these constraints make it difficult for NADMO to fully shift its focus from disaster response to disaster prevention, a move he described as necessary for long-term safety and resilience in communities.
Aboko therefore urged residents to embrace sensitisation programmes and work closely with NADMO officers to help minimise disaster risks across the municipality.
