Unity Volleyball Club of Navrongo have emerged champions of the second edition of the Upper East Volleyball Championship after a hard-fought 3–1 victory over rivals Mobile Volleyball Club of Bolgatanga in the final played on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
The keenly contested final lived up to expectations as the two long-standing rivals battled for regional supremacy. Unity VC, however, proved stronger on the day, claiming the title and denying Mobile VC the chance to defend the crown they won in the maiden edition.
Earlier in the third-place playoff, Fire Services Volleyball Club defeated Spikers by three sets to zero to secure the bronze medals.
The championship featured a qualification format that saw participating clubs zoned into two groups ahead of the main competition. Three clubs from each zone progressed to form the Top Six teams that competed for the ultimate prize. Last year’s inaugural edition, hosted in Bolgatanga, featured ten clubs and was won by Bolga Mobile.
Speaking to Mike Sports during the competition, the Chairman of the Upper East Volleyball Association, Issahaka Anas Abdullai, said the championship was introduced to revive and promote volleyball in the region, noting a steady decline in interest in the sport.
“This competition is our attempt to resurrect volleyball in the Upper East Region. We are focusing on the youth now, but we plan to extend the development programme to basic schools,” he stated.
The Acting Upper East Regional Sports Director and National Female Volleyball Coach, Rahman Danlaadi, also expressed concern about the low patronage of volleyball in the region. He urged parents to encourage their children to take up the sport, describing volleyball as a potential source of employment and career development.
Organisers have announced that the next edition of the Upper East Volleyball Championship will be hosted in a different district as part of efforts to widen participation and interest across the region.
