The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has cut the sod for the construction of a two-storey, 12-unit classroom block, an assembly hall, and a perimeter fence wall at Navrongo Senior High School (NAVASCO) in the Upper East Region.
The project, which is being funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), is aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing teaching and learning conditions at the school.
Speaking at a brief ceremony held on the school premises on Friday, April 17, Akamugri expressed his excitement about the initiative and assured stakeholders that the project would be completed within 18 months.
He noted that the development underscores government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through improved infrastructure.
“The project is a demonstration of the government’s resolve to invest in education and provide a better future for our young people.” He said.
The Headmistress of the school, Mercy Babachuwe, welcomed the project, describing it as timely and essential to the school’s growth.
She particularly highlighted the importance of the fence wall, noting that its absence has exposed the school to intrusions.
“We are extremely grateful to the President for these projects, especially the wall. The school has become a playing ground for both humans and animals due to the lack of a fence.” She stated.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, Faustina Abulu, also expressed optimism that the project would significantly improve the learning environment. She urged the contractor and consultants to ensure quality work and value for money.
“I urge the consultants and the contractor to exercise due diligence while the school authorities create an enabling environment to ensure value for money.” She said.
Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, reaffirmed his commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges in schools within the constituency.
He expressed appreciation to the government for prioritising education.
“As a teacher, I understand the importance of a conducive learning environment. The commitment to improving education infrastructure is key to securing a better future for our children.” He noted.
The project is expected to ease congestion, enhance security, and create a more conducive academic environment for students and staff of NAVASCO.
