Accept Wontumi’s apology and consider presidential pardon – David Yorose appeals to Mahama
NPP communicator says Wontumi's apology reflects genuine remorse and urges President Mahama to exercise his constitutional power of clemency.
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, David Yorose, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to accept the apology of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and consider granting him a presidential pardon.
According to Yorose, Wontumi’s decision to apologise demonstrates that he has reflected on his actions and acknowledged that some of the remarks he made during the 2024 general election campaign were inappropriate.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Mike FM on Wednesday, July 29, Yorose said apologising after recognising one’s mistakes is a normal human response and should be met with forgiveness.
“If you do something, you may not realise it so much until you are maybe in trouble, then you apologise. It is normal as a human being to apologise, and it is normal as a human being to accept apology, no matter what,” he said.
He argued that the timing of Wontumi’s apology should not be used to question its sincerity, noting that people often reflect more deeply on their actions after going through difficult experiences.
Yorose maintained that Wontumi’s apology was a genuine expression of remorse and stressed that the President has the constitutional discretion to decide whether to grant him clemency.
“Everybody can be granted a presidential pardon. It is the will of the President to grant Wontumi a presidential pardon. But he has apologised, and that is the first step,” he stated.
Yorose also called on the government to ensure fairness in the fight against illegal mining, questioning why other individuals accused of similar offences have not faced the same level of prosecution.
He added that if granted a presidential pardon, Wontumi would have the opportunity to reflect further on his actions and make positive contributions to society.
