Moses Apiah urges solution-driven journalism to spur Upper East development

2025 Upper East Journalist of the Year Moses Apiah urges media practitioners to prioritise investigative, advocacy and solutions-driven reporting to address regional development challenges.

The 2025 Upper East Journalist of the Year, Moses Apiah has called on journalists in the region to move beyond event-based reporting and focus on investigative, advocacy and solutions-driven journalism to help address developmental challenges.

According to him, the media has a critical role to play in identifying societal problems, bringing them to the attention of relevant authorities and following up to ensure that practical solutions are found.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday October 6, Apiah who was adjudged the 2025 Upper East Journalist of the Year at this year’s Upper East Regional GJA Awards, urged journalists to place greater emphasis on stories that create tangible impact in communities.

He said his passion for rural journalism had influenced his decision to focus on issues affecting vulnerable groups and underserved communities, including adolescent reproductive health, defilement and other community challenges.

Apiah explained that some of his stories had helped bring critical issues to public attention and triggered the necessary interventions and actions to address them.

“We should move beyond announcements and practise solution-driven, advocacy and accountable journalism.”

He stressed that a journalism practice centred on solutions and accountability was essential to promoting development in the Upper East Region.

The 2025 Upper East Journalist of the Year also highlighted some of the challenges confronting journalists in the region, including inadequate resources and the reluctance of some individuals and institutions to provide information needed for effective reporting.

He said the recognition given him would serve as motivation to pursue more development-oriented stories capable of positively impacting individuals and communities.

Apiah therefore appealed to the public to support journalists and media houses in the region with the necessary resources to enable them to effectively discharge their mandate.

He also challenged media houses to invest in the professional development and welfare of their journalists, saying well-resourced and empowered journalists would be better positioned to produce more impactful, solutions-oriented stories.
