Builsa South Youth demonstrate over deplorable Chuchuliga–Sandema–Fumbisi–Wiesi Road

According to the group, the Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Sandema–Fumbisi–Wiesi road was awarded in 2016 to Myturn Construction Company Limited, yet nearly a decade later, the project remains unfinished.

The Youth of Builsa South District  in the Upper East Region have staged a demonstration in Fumbisi to demand urgent completion of the Chuchuliga–Sandema–Fumbisi–Wiesi road network, describing its prolonged delay as a threat to lives, livelihoods and food security.

At a press briefing held during the protest, on Tuesday, February 17, 2028, Amwaate Isaac Atiim, convener of the group said the continued abandonment of the critical inter-district road has caused unmeasurable and painful consequences for residents of Buluk and the wider Builsa area.

According to the group, the Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Sandema–Fumbisi–Wiesi road was awarded in 2016 to Myturn Construction Company Limited, yet nearly a decade later, the project remains unfinished.

They stressed that the road is not a minor feeder road but a vital link connecting farming communities, market centres, health facilities and schools across Builsa North and Builsa South districts.

“This is a critical inter-district and inter-regional road. Its abandonment has subjected residents and road users to severe hardship,” the statement read.

The youth outlined the impact of the road’s deplorable condition on the people, citing frequent road accidents and reported loss of lives.

They further indicated that transport fares and vehicle maintenance costs have increased significantly due to the poor nature of the road, while access to markets has been reduced, affecting traders and farmers.

The group also revealed that some health workers and teachers are unwilling to accept postings to the area because of accessibility challenges, leading to delays in emergency healthcare services and affecting education delivery.

The youth emphasized that Buluk, particularly Builsa South District, plays a key role in national development. The district is home to the largest rice valley in northern Ghana, producing thousands of tonnes of rice annually.

The area also produces maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea and supports significant livestock production.

They warned that the poor road network undermines food transportation, threatens farmers’ incomes and poses risks to national food security.

The demonstrators presented four key demands including,

  1. Immediate review and possible termination of the existing contract with Myturn Construction Company Limited if it is still in force, due to evident delays and lack of completion.
  2. Prompt award of the project to a technically and financially capable contractor to ensure speedy completion of the road and associated internal networks.
  3. Immediate implementation of the government’s policy to construct at least 10 kilometres of asphalt roads in each district annually, so that Builsa North and South can benefit from durable roads.
  4. Transparent communication to the public on the status, funding and timeline of the road project.
