Delegation evaluates impact of safety net programme on vulnerable households in Upper East

A delegation from the Ghana Productive Safety Net Programme (GPSNP) has visited the Upper East Region to evaluate the performance and impact of its second phase, a major social intervention targeting vulnerable households.

The team, led by Desmond Duametu, comprises officials from the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Finance, and the World Bank.

The visit is aimed at taking stock of the programme’s progress and engaging stakeholderson the outcomes of the initiative.

The Upper East Region, where the programme was first piloted, remains a focal point in assessing its effectiveness, with the delegation engaging the Regional Coordinating Council and other key stakeholders.

Addressing the team, Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, emphasized the importance of sustaining the programme, describing it as “critical to improving the lives of the region’s most vulnerable people.”

He disclosed that although government’s fiscal consolidation measures have led to the capping of some projects, a special dispensation has been granted to extend the programme by an additional year.

The Minister further reaffirmed the commitment of the governing National Democratic Congress to social protection initiatives, noting that as a social democratic party, it remains dedicated to safeguarding such interventions.

“Despite existing challenges, efforts must be made to sustain the programme, as it serves the needs of the poor and voiceless.” He stressed.

Akamugri described the GPSNP as highly relevant to the Upper East Region, citing persistent economic and environmental challenges. He explained that the region’s predominantly agrarian economy continues to suffer from erratic rainfall patterns, with rains now typically starting in June and ending by September.

The Ghana Productive Safety Net Programme is a nationwide initiative designed to provide income support, strengthen livelihoods, and build resilience among poor and vulnerable households.
