Security workers in Upper East education sector cry over delayed overtime allowances
Security workers within the education sector in the Upper East Region have expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in the payment of their overtime allowances, describing the situation as a major source of frustration among members.
The Principal Industrial Relations Officer of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) in the region, Matthew Abeaba Abereniya, revealed that the allowances have remained in arrears for some time, adversely affecting the welfare of affected workers.
He made the remarks in an interview in Bolgatanga on the sidelines of a one-day capacity-building workshop organised by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for members of the Security Workers Association in the education sector.
According to Abereniya, the continued delay in payment has become a serious welfare issue that requires urgent intervention from the relevant authorities.
He warned that failure to address the matter promptly could result in grave consequences, including the possible withdrawal of services by security workers stationed at various educational institutions.
Abereniya therefore appealed to the appropriate authorities to expedite the payment process, stressing that the welfare of security officers remains critical to maintaining safety, discipline, and order within schools.

The workshop brought together security workers from various educational institutions across the region to strengthen their professional skills and enhance campus security.
Participants received training in modern security techniques and practical strategies for managing emerging threats within school environments.
Discussions focused on issues such as student kidnapping, unauthorized movement of students from campuses, theft of school property, and other security-related challenges confronting educational institutions.
Facilitators at the workshop underscored the importance of vigilance, teamwork, and proactive engagement in preventing security breaches and ensuring the safety of students and staff.
At the end of the training, participants pledged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve security in schools across the region, while also renewing calls for improved welfare conditions to motivate them in the discharge of their duties.
