Upper East Regional Minister cuts sod for GH¢33 million 24-Hour economy Market in Sandema
Project expected to boost jobs, commercial activity, and local economic transformation under government’s 24-hour economy agenda

A major milestone was recorded in Sandema on Thursday as the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, officially cut the sod for the construction of a GH¢33 million 24-hour economy market aimed at transforming economic activities in the municipality.
The ceremony brought together government officials, traditional authorities, stakeholders, and residents, all of whom described the project as a significant step towards economic growth and development in the area.
The Regional Minister, accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, the Municipal Chief Executive, Solomon Akogti, and traditional leaders led by the Overlord of the Builsa Traditional Area, Nab Azagsuk Azantilow II, described the initiative as a transformative intervention under the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
Speaking at the event, Atanga noted that the market project forms part of efforts by the government to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and improve livelihoods within the municipality and beyond.
He also disclosed that the proposed Women’s Development Bank would employ only women, explaining that the policy is intended to economically empower women and strengthen their participation in national development.
For his part, Agalga said the market project represents one of the many components of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader 24-hour economy policy framework.
According to him, the initiative is expected to encourage round-the-clock commercial activities, expand employment opportunities, and boost local economic growth.
The MP further revealed that the project, valued at GH¢33 million, would be financed through the District Assembly Common Fund and is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Akogti, expressed appreciation to the Overlord of the Builsa Traditional Area for releasing land for the project.
He assured residents that adequate funds had been earmarked for the construction works and urged community members to monitor the contractor’s activities and the quality of materials used to ensure accountability and value for money.
Meanwhile, the Overlord of the Builsa Traditional Area, Nab Azagsuk Azantilow II, welcomed the initiative and pledged his full support towards the successful execution of the project.
Reactions among residents, however, were mixed. While some questioned the choice of location and whether the available land would be sufficient for such a large-scale development, others welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the project would create jobs, enhance commercial activities, and improve the appearance of the Sandema township upon completion.
