Navrongo NPP Youth Organiser aspirant proposes secretariat to connect young people to opportunities
Donald Abowinum says a proposed Youth Secretariat and skills-focused programmes will help connect young people to opportunities while strengthening grassroots participation in the NPP.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Organiser hopeful for the Navrongo Central Constituency, Donald Abowinum, has unveiled a four-point agenda aimed at empowering young people and increasing their participation in politics and community development.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, June 29, Abowinum said the future of the constituency and the party depended on equipping young people with the skills, opportunities and support needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He outlined his vision, which includes the establishment of a Youth Secretariat, the creation of a comprehensive database of qualified young people in the constituency, regular engagement with youth across all electoral areas, and the promotion of sports as a tool for unity and grassroots mobilisation.
According to him, the proposed initiatives would help connect young people to employment opportunities, government interventions and other programmes while strengthening the party’s grassroots structures.
Abowinum explained that the proposed Youth Secretariat would serve as a coordinating body for youth affairs in the constituency and monitor the equitable distribution of opportunities.
“The Youth Secretariat is actually going to be the watchdog of opportunities and how they are shared,” he stated.
He said the secretariat would compile a database capturing the qualifications, skills and locations of party youth across the constituency’s 35 electoral areas to ensure that qualified young people are considered for employment opportunities in public institutions and government programmes.
As part of his agenda, Abowinum also pledged to organise quarterly engagement sessions with young people to solicit ideas on party development, governance and constituency issues.
He further promised to promote apprenticeship and skills development programmes, particularly for young women, to enhance their economic empowerment.
Addressing the issue of money in internal party elections, the youth organiser hopeful described the monetisation of politics as one of the greatest obstacles preventing competent and committed young people from seeking leadership positions.
“The best support is to take away the monetisation of politics. Politics should be reduced to community impact, not the amount of money I remove from my pocket to buy someone’s conscience to vote for me,” he said.
He, therefore, appealed to delegates to elect leaders based on competence, commitment and proven service to the party rather than financial inducements.
With the NPP preparing to reorganise ahead of the 2028 general elections, Abowinum expressed confidence in his ability to mobilise the youth and contribute to the party’s electoral fortunes.
