NPP Regional elections predict strong challenge ahead of 2028 – Barnabas Adazu

NPP Electoral Affairs Officer for Navrongo Central, Barnabas Adazu, says the party’s newly elected regional executives can strengthen its grassroots structures and mount a stronger challenge to the NDC in the 2028 elections.

The Electoral Affairs Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Barnabas Adazu, says the outcome of the party’s recent Upper East Regional elections has positioned the NPP for a strong challenge in the 2028 general elections.

He commended the newly elected regional executives, describing the elections as generally successful and expressing confidence in their ability to strengthen the party’s organisational structures ahead of the next polls.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, August 19, Adazu said grassroots members were satisfied with the calibre of individuals elected and were prepared to support the new leadership to advance the party’s growth.

He stressed that the regional elections were about the collective interests of the NPP in the Upper East Region, rather than the geographical origins of individual candidates.

“Generally, the election was about Upper East and whoever emerged as winner, irrespective of where the person is coming from. Anybody from any part of the region under NPP has a central area to work for victory.”

Adazu also expressed confidence that the party’s constitutional provision for appointments would help address concerns about the representation of areas that did not secure elected positions.

According to him, the NPP still has a number of positions to fill through appointments, creating an opportunity for broader representation across the region.

He said the Bawku zone currently had about five representatives, while the Bonaboto area had approximately four or five, leaving room for other areas, including Kassena-Nankana, Builsa and Chuchuliga-Paga, to benefit from the remaining appointments.

Turning his attention to the 2028 elections, Adazu questioned the possibility of the NDC retaining all 15 parliamentary seats in the Upper East Region.

He challenged the governing party to account for its development record in the region, particularly in constituencies where various promises had been made to residents.

Using the Navrongo Central Constituency as an example, he questioned the progress of commitments by the Member of Parliament to support farmers with tractors and upgrade health facilities.

He also raised concerns over the distribution of 1,500 bags of fertilizer reportedly allocated to farmers in the constituency, questioning whether the inputs would ultimately reach the intended beneficiaries.

Adazu argued that parliamentary candidates must go beyond relying on their party’s traditional strongholds and make deliberate efforts to attract development to their constituencies.

“We want an MP who will think outside the box, to be able to bring development to the constituency. He needs to work extra to bring development to each constituency,” he said.

Adazu cited infrastructure and other development concerns, including the progress of the Upper East Regional Airport, and called on elected representatives to do more to support development in the region.

He maintained that the NPP’s immediate priority should be to consolidate its organisational structures, ensure fair representation and deepen engagement with the grassroots as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
