Tourism in Upper East improving compared to previous years – GTA

The Upper East Regional Deputy Director of the GTA, Joseph Azika, attributed the improved performance to collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening and promoting the sector.

Tourism in the Upper East Region is experiencing significant growth compared to previous years, according to officials of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

The Upper East Regional Deputy Director of the GTA, Joseph Azika, attributed the improved performance to collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening and promoting the sector.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, February 12, Azika highlighted the region’s increasing visibility, particularly on social media and other digital platforms.

“Tourism is doing well compared to previous years. We are more visible now when it comes to social media and other networks,” he said.

He explained that the Authority has intensified marketing efforts, showcasing the region’s tourist attractions and cultural festivals, which have helped positively project the Upper East Region to both local and international audiences.

Azika cited events such as PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebration, as well as the Dunseema Festival at Kandiga, as key initiatives that have elevated the region’s profile.

“We had one of the best PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebrations in the region. The Dunseema Festival at Kandiga and many others are projecting the region,” he noted.

Beyond promotion, the GTA is also collaborating with key stakeholders to improve infrastructure at major tourist sites to enhance visitor experience.

“We are working to see how best we can give a facelift to some of the tourist attractions so they will be more appealing to visitors and serve as pulling factors. Pikworo is an example of a site that has been given a facelift,” Azika added.

The renewed focus on promotion and infrastructure development is expected to further position the Upper East Region as a competitive tourism destination in Ghana.
