Kopanamo highlights grassroots experience in NDC Regional Vice Chairmanship bid
NDC Upper East Regional Vice Chairperson aspirant James Kojo Kopanamo says his decades of grassroots experience have shaped his vision for strengthening the party’s structures and coordination.
James Kojo Kopanamo, an aspirant for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Upper East Regional Vice Chairperson position, has cited his extensive experience in the party’s grassroots structures as a key motivation for seeking the position.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, September 21, Kopanamo said his more than two decades of active involvement in the NDC had given him a deep understanding of the challenges confronting the party at the branch, constituency and regional levels.
He said his political involvement dates back to 1982, adding that he later became actively engaged in the party’s mainstream political activities under the guidance of experienced party members.
Kopanamo said he subsequently served as Constituency Youth Organiser before becoming Constituency Secretary, a position he held for two terms.
He later became Constituency Chairman in 2009 and served three consecutive terms before losing the position in 2022.
Explaining his decision to contest the Regional Vice Chairperson position, Kopanamo said his years at the constituency level had exposed him to challenges relating to communication, coordination and collaboration among branch executives, constituency executives, Members of Parliament and Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs).
He said the regional executive structure had an important role to play in coordinating the activities of constituencies across the region and strengthening collaboration among the party’s various structures.
Kopanamo also proposed the organisation of annual accountability forums in each district to provide Members of Parliament, MDCEs and constituency executives with platforms to account directly to residents.
According to him, such engagements would enable communities to better understand development projects being implemented in their areas while providing residents with an opportunity to raise concerns about projects and other issues affecting them.
He noted that not everyone followed political discussions on radio and television, making direct community engagement necessary.
Kopanamo further called for greater attention to strengthening the party’s branch, constituency and regional structures before focusing on the selection of a presidential candidate.
He also stressed the need for unity within the NDC, saying stronger cooperation among party members and structures would help consolidate the party’s organisational structures ahead of future elections.
