There is no LGBTQ+ bill yet for Mahama to sign – NDC’s Carl Maadi
He noted that there is currently no bill ready for the President to sign into law, unlike in the case of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Carl Maadi, a member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, has defended President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments suggesting that the government currently has higher-priority concerns than matters relating to LGBTQ+ issues.
The President, speaking during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House on March 30, 2026, said that LGBTQ+ issues are not the most pressing concern facing the nation.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, April 3, 2026, Maadi defended the President’s position, insisting that his comments do not indicate reluctance to act on any future legislation.
He further noted that there is currently no bill ready for the President to sign into law, unlike in the case of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“President Mahama has assured Ghanaians that when a bill comes to his table, he will sign it. Has the bill gone to his table? No, there is no such bill on Mahama’s table,” he said.
“I’m saying that if a bill were worked on today, taken to Parliament today, passed into law today, and sent to President Mahama today, he would sign it.” Maadi affirmed.
He also supported the President’s stance that the nation is currently grappling with fundamental needs such as education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter.
“So he’s saying that while this particular bill is being considered, there are other urgent matters we need to prioritize health, education, water, and food.” Maadi added.
He maintained that the NDC remains committed to passing the legislation as a government-sponsored bill.
