AfriKids Ghana sponsors education reporting category at 5th Upper East GJA Awards
The organisation says the sponsorship reflects its commitment to quality education reporting and keeping children’s learning at the centre of public discourse.
AfriKids Ghana has sponsored the Education Reporting category of the 5th Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, reaffirming its commitment to promoting quality education reporting and putting children’s learning at the centre of public discourse.
The organisation says its decision to support the category is informed by its belief that children’s learning extends beyond the classroom and is shaped by the home and wider community.
Speaking on the sponsorship, Country Director of AfriKids Ghana, David Pwalua, said the organisation’s work through its RISE UP programme in the Upper East Region focuses on empowering caregivers, community leaders and schools to take ownership of efforts to get children into school, keep them there and support their learning.
“At AfriKids, we believe that every child’s learning is shaped not only in the classroom but also at home and in the community,” Pwalua said.
He explained that through the RISE UP programme, AfriKids Ghana was working with communities and schools to strengthen local efforts towards improving children’s access to and participation in education.
According to him, journalists have a complementary role to play by bringing attention to the realities surrounding education and ensuring that important voices and experiences are reflected in public discussions.
“Journalists play a similar role. When the media tells the stories of the impact of education, including what is working, what is not, and whose voices are missing, communities and decision-makers can act,” he said.
Pwalua said supporting the Education Category of the GJA Awards was therefore a way of recognising and encouraging journalism that contributes to meaningful conversations about children’s education and learning.
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the GJA, Albert Sore, expressed appreciation to AfriKids Ghana for its continued partnership with the association and for supporting the awards once again.
“Afrikids Ghana is one of our long-standing partners and we are excited to have them supporting us once again for this year’s awards ceremony,” Sore said.
He said the GJA was particularly grateful for AfriKids Ghana’s sponsorship of the Education Reporting category and expressed hope that the partnership between the two organisations would grow stronger.
Sore also appealed to other corporate organisations, institutions and individuals to come on board with support to help make the 5th Upper East Regional GJA Awards a success.
The 5th Upper East Regional GJA Awards are expected to recognise journalists whose work has made significant contributions to public eeducation, accountability and development across the region, with various categories highlighting excellence in journalism.
