Decline in bribery in current gov’t driven by fear, not reform – NPP Youth Organizer
The GSS’s Wave 2 report indicates that the proportion of people who admitted to giving bribes, either in cash or gifts, has reduced from 18.4% to 14.3%. Additionally, cases of officials directly requesting bribes have dropped from 51.3% to 38.6%.
The Youth Organizer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Daniel Bayivere, has attributed the recent decline in bribery reported by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to the fact that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration is still in its first year in office.
The GSS’s Wave 2 report indicates that the proportion of people who admitted to giving bribes, either in cash or gifts, has reduced from 18.4% to 14.3%. Additionally, cases of officials directly requesting bribes have dropped from 51.3% to 38.6%.
However, speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday November 24, Bayivere argued that it is premature to conclude that bribery has genuinely declined under the current government.
“The NDC is just in its first year, and the President has cautioned them, so everybody is being careful. You don’t get into office and start misbehaving or engaging in corruption-related activities in the first year. Let’s see what happens in the next two years, whether this figure will be maintained, decreased, or increased.” He stated.
Bayivere further referenced the previous NPP administration, noting that similar positive indicators were recorded during its first year as well.
He believes that sustained, long-term reforms, rather than first-year caution, will ultimately determine the country’s success in reducing corruption.
