Chuchuliga Traditional Council enskins Azug-Yeri Sub-Chief, postpones two other ceremonies over unsettled disputes

The Council had initially scheduled the enskinment of three new sub-chiefs for the communities of Tiedema, Azug-Yeri, and Azua-Yeri within the Chuchuliga Traditional Area. However, unresolved disputes in Tiedema and Azua-Yeri led to the postponement of those ceremonies.

The Chuchuliga Traditional Council, with support from the Registrar of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, has enskined a new sub-chief for the Azug-Yeri community in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region.

The successful enskinment in Azug-Yeri marks an important step in strengthening traditional leadership and governance in the area. The Council noted that the process underscores the value of unity, dialogue, and respect for customs in maintaining peace and development across the traditional area.

The ceremony, attended by community members, elders, traditional leaders, and dignitaries from across the region, marked the formal installation of the new custodian of Azug-Yeri’s cultural heritage.

However, two other enskinment ceremonies have been postponed following disputes. Speaking to the media, the chief of the Chuchuliga Traditional Area, Nab Francis Asangalisa, said the postponements were necessary to give the affected communities more time to resolve their differences and present a united front.

“The enskinment for Tiedema has been rescheduled to one week from today, while that of Azua-Yeri will take place in two weeks. We want everything to be done in peace and with the full consensus of the kingmakers and family gates concerned.” He stated.

Meanwhile, Registrar of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Dr. Abutu Kapori, underscored the importance of traditional authority in complementing modern governance, urging the new leaders to serve with integrity and commitment.

The Builsa North Municipal Police Commander, ASP Joseph Tabiri, who also attended the ceremony, encouraged the new sub-chief to promote unity, uphold customs, support development efforts, and help combat criminal activities in the area.

Affected community members expressed gratitude to the chief for postponing the two installations, noting that the extra time will allow them to settle their differences and present a consensus candidate who can contribute to cultural preservation, conflict resolution, and local development.
