CJ’s dismissal underscores need for professionalism in public office – Lawyer Ayuure
His remarks follow the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonor by President Mahama for “stated misbehaviour” during her tenure as head of the Supreme Court.
Private legal practitioner, Amos Ayuure, has cautioned public officers to uphold professional conduct in the discharge of their duties.
His remarks follow the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President Mahama for “stated misbehaviour” during her tenure as head of the Supreme Court.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 3, Lawyer Ayuure explained that the removal process was consistent with the provisions of the Constitution.
“This is the first time we have had the opportunity to enquire into the conduct of the Chief Justice. The procedure has been consistent with the constitution; it’s been consistently complied with.” He said.
He stressed that the removal of the Chief Justice on grounds of misconduct should serve as a warning to all public officers to remain committed to professionalism.
“This removal serves as a lesson to those in public office. Once the major reason is misconduct, it tells us that we should be able to measure our conduct.” He added.
Lawyer Ayuure further clarified that the presidential directive bars the former Chief Justice from returning to the bench in any capacity.
“The warrant from the President indicates that the Chief Justice has been removed as Chief Justice of Ghana and as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana. I do not think that she has any option to go back to the Supreme Court or even the lower courts.” He noted.
