President John Dramani Mahama has stated that every Ghanaian should undergo health screening at least once a year under the newly launched Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
According to the President, the initiative will involve health professionals conducting routine checks within communities to ensure early detection and treatment of diseases, thereby reducing the burden on individuals and the national health system.
Speaking at the launch of the policy in Accra on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, President Mahama said a key component of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme is preventive care through regular screenings.
“Under the current health system, patients are attended to only when they are sick, making it largely curative. One key aspect of the free primary healthcare programme is prevention to identify illnesses early and provide treatment before they develop into more serious conditions.” He said.

The President called on traditional and religious leaders to support the initiative by encouraging their communities to participate in annual health screenings.
“We are encouraging our traditional and religious leaders to help mobilise their communities when we roll out the programme. At least every Ghanaian must be screened once a year.” He added.
President Mahama emphasized that the Free Primary Healthcare Programme is not intended to replace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), but rather to complement it.
He further noted that primary healthcare services under the initiative will be provided free of charge at the community level.
