Farmers marked this year’s celebration in mourning- Thomas Kwalase
Kwalase said the livelihoods of farmers have declined significantly since the change of government.
Thomas Kwalase, the Chiana-Paga Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that many farmers in the Kassena-Nankana area observed the 41st Farmers’ Day “in mourning” due to what he described as worsening conditions under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, December 8, Kwalase said the livelihoods of farmers have declined significantly since the change of government.
“Farmers celebrated in mourning on Friday, My landlord even told me that farmers in Navrongo held a meeting to boycott the entire celebration because of the hardship they are facing and the deception they believe they’ve received from the NDC government.”
Kwalase criticised the government for what he described as a failure to deliver farm inputs under its Feed Ghana initiative, which was captured in the 2025 national budget. According to him, the delay in distributing subsidised seeds and fertilizers contributed to high production costs for farmers during the last farming season.
“What Ato told us about the implementation of the Feed Ghana programme, how tons of fertilizer and maize and rice seeds have supposedly been distributed nationwide, is not what farmers on the ground are seeing.” He argued.
“We have just ended the farming season, we are in December, and now we are being told that seeds and fertilizers are arriving in the region for the 2025 season this ‘Qnet government’ wants us to believe this.”
He accused the government of deception and urged it to fulfil its commitments to farmers, warning that failure to address their challenges could reflect in the next general elections.
