Free SHS secretariat urges parents, teachers collaboration to ensure right school placements

To ensure informed and successful placements, education officials are urging stakeholders to engage meaningfully in the selection process.

With the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) set to begin on Wednesday, June 11, officials from the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Secretariat of the Ministry of Education are calling for active collaboration among parents, teachers, and students in selecting senior high schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The school selection process, which is ongoing, plays a critical role in the placement of candidates into second-cycle institutions across the country. To ensure informed and successful placements, education officials are urging stakeholders to engage meaningfully in the selection process.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, June 5, Eric Borsah, Senior Operations Officer at the National Free SHS Secretariat, emphasized the importance of strategic decision-making.

“For this year, students are to choose five main schools and two alternatives,” Borsah said. “Students may choose one Category A school, up to two Category B schools, and may select all five from Category C if they wish. Category A schools can be selected for either day or boarding.”

He stressed that once placement is completed, no changes will be allowed.

“It’s a collaborative effort. Parents are encouraged to visit schools with their wards and work with teachers and headteachers to understand the selection criteria. This year, there will be no changes once a student is placed in any of the seven selected schools.” He said

Borsah also highlighted that resources and guidance are available through school administrators and district education offices for families needing assistance.

Adding to the discussion, Achaab Daniel Adams, the Upper East Regional Coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat, addressed widespread misconceptions about school categorization.

“The categorization of schools into A, B, and C is based on subscription, not performance. Category A schools are those with high demand, not necessarily better academic results.”

He also urged students to consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) options, challenging the notion that TVET schools are only for low-performing students.

“TVET institutions offer valuable skills and are not for underperforming students. They provide real opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship,” Adams added.
