GJA Chairman calls for support to celebrate journalism excellence
Upper East GJA Chairman Albert Sore has appealed for sponsorship and public support for the 5th Upper East GJA Awards scheduled for October 2.
The Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the Upper East Region, Albert Sore, has called on corporate institutions, individuals and the general public to support the Association in organising the 5th Upper East GJA Awards.
The awards, scheduled for October 2, are aimed at recognising journalists who have demonstrated professionalism and made meaningful contributions to community development through their work.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, September 11, Sore said preparations for the fifth edition of the regional awards were underway, with the Association working to ensure a successful event.
He appealed for sponsorship, explaining that the GJA was not a profit-making organisation and did not have the financial capacity to solely fund the awards.
According to him, the Association relies on sponsorship from businesses, organisations, individuals and other stakeholders to organise the ceremony, provide prizes and support award-winning journalists.
Sore expressed appreciation to MyTurn Limited and Lesken Enterprise Limited, the main sponsors of this year’s event, as well as other sponsors for supporting the event in various capacities.
He, however, called for additional support, noting that sponsorship would not only help finance the awards but also enable the Association to organise training programmes, workshops and other professional development activities for journalists in the region.
Beyond the awards, Sore urged journalists to uphold ethical and fair reporting, stressing that journalism must serve the public interest and should never be used as a tool to victimise individuals.
He further advised journalists to resist the temptation to use their platforms to settle personal disputes, emphasising the need for fairness, balance and adherence to professional standards in reporting.
“Journalism should not be a tool for victimizing people that you don’t like,” he said.
Sore added that journalists must give all sides of a story the opportunity to be heard and allow professional and ethical standards to guide their work.
