Isaac Azunaba has been confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku, following a decisive vote by the Bawku Municipal Assembly.

Azunaba secured 25 votes in his favour, with only two members voting against him. There were rejected ballots.

The confirmation, seen as a crucial step toward political stability in the troubled municipality, was followed by a passionate call for peace and unity from the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga.

Addressing assembly members after the balloting, Akamugri urged stakeholders to work together to restore calm and foster development in the area.

“For a long time now, Bawku is not in the news for a good reason. Bawku is in the news always for the bad reason and so we want to urge all of you seated here. You are the stakeholders. You in this room are the stakeholders of this area, of this municipality. So we leave it in your hands that we should try as much as possible to ensure that we give peace a chance and make sure that we develop the area.” He appealed.

The minister underscored the importance of peace as the foundation for any meaningful progress.

“When peace is available, everything can be added,” he noted, emphasizing that no development agenda can be successful without stability.

Bawku has been a hotspot for a longstanding ethnic and chieftaincy tensions, resulting in intermittent violence, loss of lives, and economic stagnation.

Despite the presence of security personnel and the enforcement of curfews, recent weeks have seen a resurgence of unrests in parts of the municipality.

Akamugri acknowledged the ongoing difficulties but assured residents of the government’s commitment to finding a lasting solution.

“We know there are difficulties, and the president has assured you that he is working at it. Sooner or later, you will have a resolution of the matter, and we can all rest,” he said.

The confirmation of Isaac Azunaba as MCE comes at a pivotal moment, with both local and national stakeholders pushing for renewed efforts to stabilize the area and pave the way for critical development initiatives.
