Kasena-Nankana is bigger than the NDC – Navrongo NPP Youth Wing slams NDC over MCE rejection

He stressed that while the NPP would prefer to steer clear of the NDC’s internal issues, they could not stay silent while the impasse threatens local governance and economic growth.

The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency has taken a swipe at the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what they describe as a failure to ensure the confirmation of President John Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Kasena-Nankana Municipal Assembly.

Addressing the media at a press conference held on Tuesday May 27, the NPP Youth Organiser, Danniel Bayivere, criticised the NDC for internal divisions that he said are stalling development in the area.

According to Bayivere, the recent rejection of the President’s nominee, Faustina Akeyom Abulu, is a direct consequence of infighting within the NDC in Navrongo. Abulu secured just 14 out of 50 votes—representing 28%—in a confirmation exercise held on April 29, leaving the municipality without an MCE for nearly a month.

“This unfortunate development does not bode well for the municipal assembly and rather sends a bad signal about the municipality, especially considering the smooth confirmations across the Upper East Region and nationwide,” Bayivere said.

He stressed that while the NPP would prefer to steer clear of the NDC’s internal issues, they could not stay silent while the impasse threatens local governance and economic growth.

“As the saying in Kasem goes, ‘ba noona de ba kanzwa,’ which literally means ‘their meat and their maggots.’ But not when the same issues escalate to levels that threaten the development, peace, and good governance of the local economy,” he added.

The Youth Wing emphasised that during the NPP’s tenure, they prioritised development over politics and ensured that presidential nominees for local government positions were confirmed without obstruction.

They called on President Mahama to expedite the nomination or re-nomination process to fill the leadership vacuum and allow developmental projects initiated under the previous NPP administration to continue.

“We wish to appeal to the Member of Parliament, Hon. Aworigo, the immediate former MP, Hon. Chiraga, and the NDC constituency executives to soften their stance and shun vindictiveness to help confirm a nominee,” the NPP Youth said.

Bayivere warned that the NPP would hold the NDC accountable if the ongoing standoff continues to hinder the municipality’s progress.

“They should understand that Navrongo is bigger than the NDC, and we will hold them to account if their current posture and body language drag development in the municipality into stagnation,” he cautioned.

The Kasena-Nankana Municipality remains without an MCE, awaiting the next move from the Presidency as residents express growing concern over stalled development projects and administrative delays.
