The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kassena-Nankana, Faustina Akeyom Abulu, has urged residents to make sanitation a daily activity rather than waiting for special clean-up days to tidy their surroundings.
Speaking after a massive clean-up exercise held on Saturday, October 4, as part of the second National Sanitation Day, Abulu stressed that maintaining a clean environment begins with a change in mindset and attitude toward cleanliness.
“This exercise is not simply about cleaning water bodies or sweeping streets. It is about resetting our mindsets, changing our attitudes, and building a shared culture of cleanliness and order.” She said.
She encouraged residents to see sanitation as a shared civic responsibility that contributes to community development.
“Today, we can transform the Upper East Region into a model of sanitation excellence, community ownership, and development.”
The exercise, organized by the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, formed part of a renewed national directive for all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to observe the first Saturday of every month as National Sanitation Day, a policy reinforced by President John Dramani Mahama to promote communal responsibility and environmental health.

Key areas cleaned included the Navrongo Lorry Station, the new Navrongo Market, the surroundings of the Navrongo Pio Chief’s Palace, and several choked gutters across the municipality.
Participants in the exercise included officers from the Ghana Police Service, who enforced the directive against opening shops during the exercise, personnel from the Ghana Immigration and Prisons Services, staff of the Municipal Assembly market women, shop owners, youth groups, and members of the general public.
