NDC’s resignation directive will promote fairness and strengthen democracy – Victor Ask-Nankong
Communicator says policy will prevent misuse of state resources and ensure a level playing field in party elections
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Victor Ask-Nankong Kaba Anedam, has defended the party’s directive requiring government appointees to resign from their positions before contesting internal party elections.
According to Anedam, the policy is aimed at promoting fairness, preventing the misuse of state resources, and strengthening the party’s internal democratic processes.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday June 5, he explained that the directive was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and would apply to all government appointees seeking elective positions within the NDC.
He noted that the measure seeks to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants by preventing public office holders from leveraging their positions or access to state resources to gain an advantage in internal party contests.
“The party wants to create fairness in the system and ensure that no person serving in government uses state resources to campaign for internal party positions,” he said.
Anedam argued that individuals who simultaneously hold government appointments and pursue party leadership positions may struggle to effectively balance both responsibilities, potentially affecting their performance.
“If you are serving in government and also serving the party, you are likely to have divided attention, and that can affect performance,” he stated.
He further explained that the directive forms part of broader efforts by the NDC to build strong and independent political institutions capable of effectively organizing and holding governments accountable, even when those governments are led by the same political party.
“We need strong political parties to sustain our democracy, and one way to achieve that is to separate party administration from government administration,” he added.
Anedam expressed confidence that the policy would strengthen the NDC’s organizational structures ahead of its internal elections while promoting transparency, accountability, and credibility within the party.
