NHIA warns health service providers against charging unauthorised fees

This caution comes on the heels of the recent uncapping of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which promises swift reimbursement of claims to ensure seamless service delivery.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has issued a stern warning to healthcare providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to refrain from charging clients unauthorized fees.

This caution comes on the heels of the recent uncapping of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which promises swift reimbursement of claims to ensure seamless service delivery.

In a notice dated March 25, 2025, the NHIA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Victor Asare Bompore emphasized the importance of adhering to policy guidelines and delivering quality healthcare services in line with NHIA standards.

The Authority stressed that providers found violating agreed-upon NHIA policy terms will face sanctions.

“Any provider found to be in violation of mutually agreed-upon NHIA policies, including the imposition of unauthorised charges, will be subject to sanctions without exemption.” The statement reads.

This move by the HNIS aims to protect members from illegal charges and ensure they receive the benefits they’re entitled to. The NHIA has historically taken a strong stance against copayments, deeming them a barrier to affordable healthcare.

To promote transparency, the NHIA said it would continue to publish details of paid claims and intensify monitoring of healthcare facilities nationwide.
