Notre Dame Boys Seminary SHS marks feast day with fun, faith and festivity

According to the Headmaster and Rector, Rev. Fr. Vitus Alnaa, this solemnity is not only a universal Catholic observance but also the school’s own patronal feast.

Notre Dame Boys Minor Seminary Senior High School in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality has celebrated its annual feast day with a vibrant blend of spiritual devotion, history, and exciting activities on the school campus.

Held on Monday, December 8, the day marked globally by the Catholic Church as the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, holds a special significance for the Notre Dame community, as the school is named after Notre Dame de l’Immaculée Conception, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

According to the Headmaster and Rector, Rev. Fr. Vitus Alnaa, this solemnity is not only a universal Catholic observance but also the school’s own patronal feast.

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Alnaa traced the school’s roots back to September 15, 1960, when Bishop Bertrand tasked Rev. Fr. Amman Labelle to return to Canada in search of resources to begin a seminary in the area.

The celebration began with a Eucharistic Mass, presided over by very Rev. Fr. Lawrence Azore, Vicar General of the Navrongo–Bolgatanga Diocese and an old boy of Notre Dame.

Following Mass and breakfast, the campus transformed into a lively festival ground filled with fun games and friendly competitions. Students, staff, and old boys participated in activities such as chair dance, football, millet-cake eating contest, and filling bottles with water.

Sister schools, especially Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS (BOGISS) and Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ SHS (OLL), joined the celebration, strengthening long-standing bonds.

“Notre Dame has a special relationship with BOGISS, and now we have found a new friend in OLL.” Rev. Fr. Alnaa said.

One of the most anticipated moments of the day was the school’s traditional bingo event. Members of the school community donated gifts, ranging from exercise books and pens.  Participants picked numbers from a sack, winning whichever prize matched the number they selected.

“We call that bingo, It’s always the top of the ice.” the Rector explained. “

The festivities also featured a football match between the staff of Notre Dame and Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ SHS, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the student body.
