Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly holds stakeholder sensitisation on structural plan for Navrongo

The preparation of the structural plan, sponsored by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a German development agency, will cover all communities under the Navrongo Central and Pungu Zonal Councils.

The Physical Planning Department of the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly has held a stakeholder sensitisation meeting to discuss the preparation of a structural plan for selected communities within the municipality.

The engagement, which took place on Wednesday, August 20, brought together chiefs, landlords, assembly members, and other community leaders from the Navrongo Central and Pungu Zonal Councils.

Speaking to the media after the session, Municipal Planning Officer Patrick Awuni explained that the initiative aims to guide the spatial development of the municipality.

“Today, we did a stakeholder engagement for the preparation of a structural plan of some portions of the municipality. Ideally, we are supposed to cover the entire municipality with the structural plan, but because of resource constraints, we are not able to. Even this one we are doing, we are being partnered by GIZ, who are giving us the technical support and backstopping to do what we are doing currently.” he said.

Awuni stressed that the structural plan is a critical document for orderly development, adding that Ghana currently operates a three-tier planning system comprising the spatial development framework, the structural plan, and the local plan.

He noted that community participation is essential to the success of the process.

“Currently, we do what we call participatory planning. The plans are for the people, so if you don’t engage them and you sit in your office to draft them, implementation becomes a problem,” he said.

He further emphasised the need to involve chiefs and landlords, who are custodians of land, to ensure smooth execution when the time for implementation comes.
