Pay your taxes to drive national development – NCCE Director urges citizens

Ajongbah stressed that development is a shared responsibility, and citizens must play their part by paying taxes regularly and willingly.

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Felicia Ajongbah, has called on citizens to show greater commitment to fulfilling their tax obligations as a vital contribution to national development.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, November 18, Ajongbah stressed that development is a shared responsibility, and citizens must play their part by paying taxes regularly and willingly.

“We have to pay taxes so that government can use the revenue to develop our communities, noted.  many areas still lack essential amenities such as schools, boreholes, and motorable roads. These facilities can only be provided when citizens honour their tax obligations. Even if you are a trader in the market, make time and pay your taxes.”

Ajongbah urged the public to discard the perception that government alone is responsible for development, explaining that citizens themselves form part of the machinery of government.

“Most people think government is someone sitting somewhere, but we are all part of government. The citizenry is the government, so when you contribute your money through taxes, it is not being squandered, what you pay eventually comes back to your community in the form of development.”

She also appealed to residents to protect public property and infrastructure funded with taxpayers’ money, warning that neglect or destruction of state assets ultimately harms the very communities they are meant to serve.

“Protecting public property is the responsibility of every citizen, when government uses your taxes to provide something for the community and you see people destroying it, keeping quiet is the same as destroying your own contribution. It means your efforts and resources have gone to waste.”

Ajongbah reiterated the NCCE’s commitment to strengthening civic awareness and encouraging active citizen participation in national development efforts.
