President Mahama to set up National Scholarship Authority

President Mahama had promised to lay before Parliament a new bill to streamline government scholarship administration, prohibit political appointees from accessing government scholarships, and eliminate political patronage, cronyism, nepotism, and corruption in awarding government scholarships.

President John Mahama has hinted at his administration’s intentions to establish a National Scholarship Authority to oversee and streamline government scholarships to the benefit of deserving students.

The President made these remarks during his address to the nation on his first 120 days social contract with the people on Wednesday, May 7.

President Mahama had promised to lay before Parliament a new bill to streamline government scholarship administration, prohibit political appointees from accessing government scholarships, and eliminate political patronage, cronyism, nepotism, and corruption in awarding government scholarships.

On this promise, the president stated that his cabinet team has approved the bill, which is set to be laid when parliament reconvenes.

“Cabinet has given policy approval for the new Scholarships Authority Bill to be laid before Parliament to fulfil this promise. I hope Parliament will consider and pass this bill expeditiously when it resumes sitting.” He said.

He noted that the new legislation will help address concerns regarding favouritism and political interference in scholarship administration.

“To ensure fairness and transparency and eliminate political patronage and corruption in awarding government scholarships, we promised to lay before Parliament a new bill to streamline administration and prohibit political appointees from accessing government scholarships,” President Mahama stated.
