Rev. James Addi Wechu has officially retired from active pastoral ministry after serving the Assemblies of God Ghana faithfully for 23 years. His retirement was announced during a special service held on Saturday, November 29, at the Hope Assemblies of God Church in Kajelo, where he has served for many years.

A native of Buru-Navio in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, Rev. Wechu hails from a royal family and has long been recognized for his humility and commitment to ministry.

He graduated from the then Northern Ghana Theological College in Kumbungu-Tamale in 2002 and was posted a year later to Kajelo, where he pioneered the Kajelo Assemblies of God Church, now known as Hope Assemblies of God.

Over the past two decades, his ministry in Kajelo has been transformative. Rev. Wechu is credited with preaching the gospel with passion, nurturing converts, mentoring young ministers, and contributing significantly to church growth across the region.

His leadership and vision led to the establishment and strengthening of several Assemblies of God branches, including the Pindaa Assemblies of God Church, Gia Assemblies of God Church, Aliah-Bwolo Assemblies of God Church, and the Tono Assemblies of God Church. He also played a key role in reviving the Buru-Kazugu Assemblies of God Church.

Delivering the sermon during the retirement service, Rev. Jonathan Abraham Imoro, Registrar of the Assemblies of God Theological and Missions Seminary, Kumbungu, and Regional Superintendent for the North West Region, commended Rev. Wechu for his unwavering dedication to ministry.

“The Lord will not put the food of a frog on a tree; He will place it where the frog can easily find it. God will remember you after retirement. Do not worry about the future, for the God of yesterday, today, and forever has settled it already.”

He then prayed for Rev. Wechu and his family before officially declaring him retired from active pastoral duty.

In his response, Rev. Wechu expressed gratitude to the church leadership, colleagues, and congregants for honoring him with the retirement service.

“I want to thank Assemblies of God Ghana and our General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Wengam. To the Upper East Regional leadership, I would like to express my sincere gratitude. I am deeply grateful to everyone here. May God bless you all.” He said.

Beyond his pastoral role at Hope Assemblies of God, Rev. Wechu has served the church and Christian community in several capacities: Missionary at the Paga Mission Field under Christian Outreach Fellowship (1997), Navrongo-Sandema Evangelical Representative, District Treasurer for the Kassena-Nankana District (2006–2012), Acting District Pastor for Kassena-Nankana West (2014), District Pastor for Kassena-Nankana West, and District Chairman for the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches (2015–2022).

He was also part of the team that translated the Bible from English into the Kasem language. Rev. Wechu is married to Madam Christiana Kawe Apio, and the couple is blessed with a daughter.
