Robert Aloo endorses Bawumia as NPP Flagbearer ahead of presidential primaries
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s national exposure, coupled with his experience in government, gives him a significant advantage over the other contenders within the party.
The 2024 Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Chiana–Paga Constituency, Robert Apechira Aloo, has thrown his support behind former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, endorsing him as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the upcoming presidential race.
The New Patriotic Party is expected to hold its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a candidate for the 2028 presidential election from five aspiring candidates: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
Aloo made his position known while speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday January 26, 2026, where he described Dr. Bawumia as the most visible and widely marketed among the five aspirants contesting for the NPP’s presidential slot.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s national exposure, coupled with his experience in government, gives him a significant advantage over the other contenders within the party.
“I supported him (Bawumia) in 2023 for his bid and I still stand by him and I’m supporting him for the 2026 January 31st primaries, these (aspirants) are strong members, very distinguished personalities of our party… but at the end of the day we must get one person who will be the presidential candidate and that is where I zero down to the fact that we have marketed Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia enough.”
“He is a competent person based on his track record as a former vice president, as a former deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana. We are also looking at what he stands for. The unity, the humility, the sense of bringing everybody on board is in him. So, we think that he, from where I sit, will be the best bet for the party going to the 2028 general elections.” He added.
Aloo further argued that the former Vice President represents the most realistic option for the NPP to recapture political power in the 2028 general elections, stressing that his candidature offers the shortest and most strategic route back to government.
“If a party is interested in capturing power at this fastest rate, we are looking at that. Within four years, you lose power, you want to get power, and of course, we are getting power in 2028. We need to present the face that the people already know. We need to present the name that people already know.”
The former Chiana–Paga parliamentary candidate also used the platform to call for unity among party members, especially after the presidential primaries. He cautioned against internal divisions and urged supporters of all aspirants to rally behind whoever emerges victorious.
“Every single serious-minded person of the NPP must look beyond 31st January and look at what we can do to bring power in 2028 and it’s not a person who can do that, It must be a collective effort and so when we finally present Mahamudu Bawumia after 31st every single person of the party should make it as a point to say look it’s done. It’s gone. We are going to work together to win power in 2028.
