Take advantage of gov’t agriculture initiatives – Kassena Nankana West DCE urges farmers
The Kassena Nankana West District Assembly in the Upper East Region has marked the 41st National Farmers’ Day with celebrations honouring distinguished farmers and fisherfolk from across the district.
The district, one of the major farming hubs in the country, is notable for its production of pepper, maize, rice, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, soybean, and livestock.

More than 40 farmers and farmer groups were awarded for their contributions to the district’s agricultural development at the ceremony, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future” on Friday December 5, 2025.
District Chief Executive for Kassena Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akrugugo, celebrated the farmers for their dedication to sustaining the nation’s food supply. He also highlighted key government interventions in the agriculture sector, urging farmers to take full advantage of the opportunities they offer.

He cited the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP), a four-year initiative aimed at boosting domestic food production, enhancing food security, and reducing reliance on imports, the Nkoko Nkitiitinkiti Project, designed to strengthen domestic poultry production, and the Tree for Life Programme, which promotes afforestation and agroforestry.
“I encourage everyone, particularly the youth, to seize these opportunities presented by this transformative project by registering with the district department of agriculture.” Akrugugo said.
The DCE also made a passionate appeal for collective action against bushfires, which he noted pose a major threat to agricultural progress, destroying farmlands, livestock, and stored produce.
“We must adopt safe, responsible farming practices, safeguard our environment, and report individuals who intentionally ignite fires.” He stressed.

District Agriculture Director, Mohammed Bukari, announced that the district has a positive crop outlook moving into 2026.
“Data collected and analyzed indicate that crop production indicators in terms of domestic production and per capita consumption in KNWD have a positive outlook.” He said.
Atingane Agogiyane, a farmer from Kandiga, was adjudged the Overall District Best Farmer. He received a certificate, a tricycle, two bags of NPK fertilizer, one bag of Urea, a knapsack sprayer, a cutlass, a pair of Wellington boots, and Yara NitroBo.

Other awardees included Faruk Kabah from Paga (Best Livestock Farmer), Abaadi Osman Petua (Best Crop Farmer), Akanfuule Charles (Best Poultry Farmer), Kwiabu Seyoro (Best Pepper Farmer), and Atanga Ayesuga from Sirigu (Best Female Farmer), among others.

The Chaina Senior High School and Our Lady of Mercy Primary School in Sirigu were recognized as the Best District Agriculture Senior High School and Best District Agriculture Primary School, respectively. In total, 40 individuals, groups, and institutions received awards.
