Two motor riders fall from Tono Dam embankment to their death

According to police preliminary findings, the two were riding a motorcycle on the bank of the dam, but lost control when they approached a curve.

The Police in Navrongo have retrieved the bodies of two people found dead in the spillway of the Tono Irrigation Dam in Navrongo.

The deceased victims – believed to be from Chiana – were on a return journey from Navrongo, when the accident happened.

According to police preliminary findings, the two were riding a motorcycle on the bank of the dam, but lost control when they approached a curve.

As a result, they reportedly plunged head-first into a portion of the spillway filled with rocks. The accident, according to additional findings, happened in the night, but the deceased were discovered by farmers the next morning.

Marks on the bank of the dam showed that the deceased attempted to apply brakes to stop the motorcycle.

Visible injuries could be seen on the heads, shoulders and arms of the deceased victims when police pulled them out of the spillway.

The Police have since transported the bodies to the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital morgue for preservation.

Following a deterioration of the dam’s embankment, the Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) some years ago installed barricades to keep vehicles and motorcycles from using it.

However, riders still defy the blockade to use the embankment.
