
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Health Promotion Officer, Jacob Agusika has said the regional health authorities are on high alert to contain the deadly meningitis should cases be detected.
According to Jacob, surveillance measures have been put in place throughout the region to prevent a possible outbreak. He also said cases suspected be meningitis are also being investigated in the laboratory.
“As of now, none of the samples have tested positive for meningitis, but health officials are not taking any chances. We are not even hoping that we have one”.
“We are taking all necessary precautions to prevent an outbreak.” He added
Appearing on the Big Mike Breakfast show on Thursday February 6, 2025, Agusika described Meningitis as a serious disease that causes inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.
“It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and can lead to serious complications, including death”
The Health Officer, therefore, urged residents to be vigilant and to report any suspected cases of meningitis to the health authorities for immediate appropriate actions to be taken.
He said symptoms of the meningitis disease include fever, headache, stiffness in the neck, among others.
He further stated that the Upper East Region has experienced outbreaks of meningitis in the past, and health officials are determined to prevent another outbreak.
“We are taking all necessary precautions to prevent an outbreak. We urge everyone to be vigilant and to report any suspected cases to the authorities immediately.” He spoke.
