Upper East Region records nearly 3,000 teenage pregnancies in first half of 2025
The Acting Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children, Georgina Aberese-Ako, described the situation as alarming and a major threat to the welfare and rights of children in the region.
The Upper East Region has recorded close to 3,000 teenage pregnancies within the first six months of 2025, according to data from health facilities in the area.
The Acting Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children, Georgina Aberese-Ako, described the situation as alarming and a major threat to the welfare and rights of children in the region.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday August 19, Aberese-Ako disclosed that the cases were captured during a recent Regional Child Protection Committee meeting, which brought together her department and other stakeholders.
“Between January and June, almost 3,000 cases of teenage pregnancies were recorded in the various health facilities. Out of these, 25 involved children between the ages of 10 and 14,” she revealed.
According to her, the data underscores the urgent need for intensified advocacy and interventions to protect children, particularly young girls, from early pregnancies and child marriages.
Aberese-Ako stressed that parents must take greater responsibility in raising their children to help curb indiscipline and prevent issues such as teenage pregnancies.
“I always hold the view that if all parents will sit up right from day one and instill discipline in their children, we will not be sitting here to talk about rights and responsibilities. Children will not be going to school to cause riots, and we will not be hearing of teenage pregnancies and child marriages.” She emphasised.
She called on all stakeholders, including families, schools, and community leaders, to work collectively in addressing the growing concerns of teenage pregnancy and child protection in the region.
