Upper East Regional Peace Council sensitizes Kadema residents on violent extremism

The training equipped community members with knowledge to identify early warning signs of radicalisation, strengthen vigilance, and promote cooperation with security agencies to safeguard peace in the area.

The Upper East Regional Peace Council has organized a two-day sensitization workshop for residents of Kadema in the Builsa North Municipality to raise awareness and build capacity in the fight against violent extremism.

The workshop, held at the Chansa Pentecost Church Hall on from 8th to 9th April 2026, was organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funding support from the Norwegian Embassy and the Denmark Embassy.

It aimed at empowering community members with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent and respond effectively to threats of violent extremism.

Participants were taken through various sessions, both theory and practical, focused on identifying early warning signs, promoting community vigilance, and fostering cooperation between residents and security agencies.

The training also emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence in safeguarding communities against radicalization.

Regional Executive Secretary, Damien Asobayire indicated that violent extremism remains a growing concern in parts of the sub-region, making it crucial for local communities like Kadema to stay informed and proactive.

He encouraged the residents to share information with appropriate authorities and to play active roles in maintaining peace and security within their communities.

Asobayire expressed optimism that the knowledge gained from the workshop would help strengthen resilience among the people and contribute to sustaining peace in the area.

He noted that the Council would form a nine-member Local Peace Committee to work closely with the Upper East Regional Peace Council to prevent and respond to violent extremism in the area.

The participants expressed gratitude to the Peace Council for the training and assured that they would share the knowledge gained from the workshop with others in their various communities.
