Youth call on leaders to clamp down on drug abuse menace

Youth advocate Norbert Alinyia lamented that many young people today are dead bodies walking trapped in cycles of drug addiction and neglect.

Youth advocates are raising alarm over the growing trend of substance abuse among young people in Ghana, warning that the menace is destroying lives and threatening the country’s human resource base.

Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM, youth advocate Norbert Alinyia lamented that many young people today are dead bodies walking trapped in cycles of drug addiction and neglect.

Alinya called on policymakers, community leaders, and institutions to take urgent action to address what he described as a national crisis.

“The youth they (Leaders) claim they are building the future for are dying, they are going through a lot, and I can attribute this psychological trauma to ineffective leadership.”

Alinyia identified several causes of drug abuse among young people, including genetic predisposition, societal neglect, broken relationships, and exploitation by some leaders who use substances to manipulate the youth.

He alleged that many communities have abandoned their role in guiding young people, creating a vacuum that exposes them to harmful habits.

Alinyia further appealed to the state to make correctional and rehabilitation institutions accessible and affordable, and to strengthen border and security controls to curb the inflow of illicit drugs.
