Youth group leads community sanitation drive in Kassena-Nankana Municipality

A youth group in Navrongo, known as Base One, has taken a bold step towards improving sanitation and preventing flooding in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region by embarking on a self-initiated drain-cleaning exercise.
The group, made up mostly of young volunteers, has been desilting and disinfecting choked drains in the municipality
Speaking to Mike News during one of their cleanup exercises on Tuesday, August 4, 2025, Timothy Abavana, a member of the group, said the motive of the initiative is to mitigate the risk of flooding during the rainy season and curb the spread of sanitation-related diseases caused by poor drainage systems.
“We saw that most of our community, most of the gutters are choked with dirt and sand, so we decided that we are going to start distilling the gutters.” Abavana said.
Despite their determination, Abavana noted that the group is constrained by limited resources and appealed to well-meaning individuals, local authorities, and businesses to support their work with tools, protective gear, disinfectants, and other logistics necessary to sustain the exercise.
“We are just small, and we are financially constrained; we need a lot of things for the work.”
The group also extended a call to other youth organisations, civil society groups, and residents in the municipality to get involved in the campaign for a cleaner environment.
“We want this to be a wake-up call to all the bases in Navrongo, all the groups everywhere, you should rise up and let’s keep our communities clean,” Abavana added.
