24-hour economy model market a component of broader policy, not a replacement – Mumuni Nyonka
NDC’s 24-hour economy policy aimed at job creation and economic growth
A former Constituency Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Mumuni Nyonka, has defended the party’s 24-hour economy model market initiative, describing it as a component of the broader 24-hour economy policy rather than a replacement for it.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, May 13, Nyonka said critics of the initiative have misunderstood the broader concept of the 24-hour economy policy as captured in the NDC’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 general elections.
“I am surprised at the way some people understand the 24-hour economy policy. They have reduced it to only the explanation about three working shifts, and because of that misunderstanding, they think the 24-hour economy model market is the entirety of the policy,” he stated.
He explained that the broader policy encompasses several sectors, including transportation, manufacturing, ports, markets, and other key areas of the economy, similar to models practiced in many countries around the world.
According to him, the policy is designed to create opportunities for Ghanaians by expanding economic activities beyond the traditional working hours, thereby creating an enabling environment for economic growth and job creation.
Nyonka noted that the 24-hour economy model market is only one component of the wider initiative, which includes several interventions aimed at stimulating local economies and generating employment opportunities, particularly for women and the youth.
He commended President John Dramani Mahama for rolling out the initiative in many districts across the country and urged Ghanaians to support the policy to ensure its successful implementation.
