Dr Mahamadu Bawumia an unknown face in the space of the Ghanaian politics was named running mate to Akufo Addo in 2008.
This was met with the same skepticism we are seeing today and matters got worse when we lost the 2008 elections. A lot of people attacked and called him names – the defeat of the election was blamed on his ‘naive’ nature and his inability to quickly adapt to the Ghanaian politics. Others called for his change in the lead up to the 2012 elections but he was maintained.
A ‘’stolen verdict’’ in 2012 resulted in another defeat but the man Bawumia stole the stage by building a strong case in the election petition that badly exposed the then government and the EC where they couldn’t even speak to their own results .
The unknown man, brought into the political space, in 2008 took up the challenge of bringing back the NPP into power by holding a series of lectures and exposing the weaknesses of the then Mahama led administration.
He did this devoid of insults and shaped the political discourse of the country where insults were relegated.
The NPP won the elections in 2016 and this ‘Unknown Bawumia’ displayed a high level of integrity and competence in the Akufo Addo led administration implementing policies like the issuance of the Ghana Card, digital address system, mobile money interoperability, paperless port systems, Gold for oil, E-pharmacy, drone delivery services for medicines, agenda 111, digitalization of the airport system, digitization of medical records and linking of government facilities just to mention a few .
The first term was smooth till COVID-19 struck; where the government prioritized the health of the citizens over the economy by providing the necessary incentives for health care workers and businesses to thrive, procuring lifesaving medications and consumables for the fight against the pandemic, locked down the country and still paid workers salaries.
A lot of economies crushed due to the pandemic and a lot are yet to recover.
The cracks became obvious but again Dr Bawumia proposed innovative ideas like locally mined gold purchased by the Bank of Ghana in cedis to pay for crude oil and petroleum products, instead of using scarce the dollar. This helped stabilize the economy and has been the steppingstone for the economic recovery we are witnessing now.
Several tough measures were taken which affected the popularity of the government. So in 2024 the NPP led by Dr Bawumia lost the elections.
Well, those talking today said they saw it in 2022 that the Npp will lose the elections and interesting enough, Bawumia was elected in 2023 so how then can you blame him for the defeat you saw in 2022?
Fast as we look into 2028, nobody stands taller than Dr Bawumia because, since he appeared on the stage, he has changed the dynamics of politics in Ghana and has proved that he can always turn failure into success.
I today declare my unflinching support and contribution to help Dr Bawumia capture power for the NPP in 2028.
