Ablekuma parliamentary election rerun lacks legal basis – NPP communicator

Akunyire further questioned the EC’s sudden shift in stance, recalling that the Commission had earlier committed to collating results from only three disputed polling stations rather than holding fresh elections.

Maxwell Akunyire, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, has stated categorically that the party will not participate in Parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

A visibly displeased Akunyire says the rerun is illegal, adding that the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 selected polling stations is flawed and lacks legal basis.

“We are not taking part in an illegal action by the EC. It is not a boycott. If it were legal for the EC to conduct the elections and we said we won’t take part, that could be a boycott. But this is an illegal action.” – Akunyire said when he appeared on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday, July 9.

Akunyire further questioned the EC’s sudden shift in stance, recalling that the Commission had earlier committed to collating results from only three disputed polling stations rather than holding fresh elections.

“The EC has consistently said they were not going to rerun the elections in the constituency because they had what it takes to collate and declare the results. I don’t know what changed,” he said.

The controversy stems from a legal dispute over the outcome of the parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North. The NPP insists that the court only directed the EC to collate results from specific polling stations, and not to conduct fresh polls.

The EC has, however, scheduled a rerun in 19 polling stations, citing unresolved irregularities.
