Protect Our Future Foundation empowers girls in Bolga-Sherigu SHS with leadership training
The training featured mentorship talks by experts and girls' rights activities and an in-depth presentation on leadership and communications. The girls were also equipped with skills to identify problems and advocate for their redress.
Fifteen girls from the Bolga-Sherigu Community Senior High School in the Upper East Region have benefited from a day’s leadership training program organised by Protect Our Future Foundation in partnership with Plan International Ghana through the She Leads accelerated fund.
The training, held on Saturday, July 12, at the school, followed the recent launch of the Girls Leadership Club in the school, aimed at empowering young girls with leadership skills to help curb teenage pregnancy and empower young girls to harness their potential and achieve their aspirations.
The training featured mentorship talks by experts and girls’ rights activities and an in-depth presentation on leadership and communications. The girls were also equipped with skills to identify problems and advocate for their redress.
Nablise Anutigah Susana, the Founder and Executive Director of Protect Our Future Foundation, said the primary goal of the initiative is to motivate the girl child to focus on education and avoid getting pregnant at teenage age, particularly while still in school.
“This project is dear to my heart because with this leadership club and training, we are hoping to contribute to decreasing teenage pregnancy. Currently, this school alone has eleven pregnant girls, which is a worrying situation for all of us.”
“So, the project is held in this school to help motivate the other girls to abstain from early sex, which will lead them to such predicaments that could hinder their future.” She added
The participants contributed effectively during the training and highlighted key challenges in the school which contribute to the prevalence of teenage pregnancy in the school.
Mavis Atisoko, a participant, underscored the importance of the training for her personal development and added that she is now well-equipped to be a voice for development in her school and society.
“I have learned how to be confident as a leader and speak about what you are facing to get support.” She said.
The Protect Our Future Foundation has said it would extend the initiative to the entire school population in the coming days, using the fifteen trained girls as ambassadors and peer educators.
