GTEC orders Hassan Ayariga to stop using Dr title over unverified academic credentials

GTEC said it had made repeated requests for documentation to confirm whether the title was earned or honorary. The Commission also asked for the name of the awarding institution, the date it was conferred, and details of the process involved.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Hassan Ayariga, Founder and Presidential Candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), to immediately stop using the academic title “Dr.” due to his failure to verify the legitimacy of the designation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 15, GTEC said it had made repeated requests for documentation to confirm whether the title was earned or honorary. The Commission also asked for the name of the awarding institution, the date it was conferred, and details of the process involved.

“To date, the Commission has not received any response from you. This continued silence is unacceptable,” the statement read.

The statement added that due to Ayariga’s non-compliance, GTEC has directed him to stop using the “Dr.” title immediately and to provide proof that it has been removed from all public and professional platforms. These include but are not limited to, social media profiles, campaign materials, and official communications.

The Commission has set July 31, 2025, as the deadline for full compliance and expects verifiable evidence of adherence to its directive.

GTEC emphasized that using academic titles without proper verification misleads the public and erodes trust in the integrity of Ghana’s educational system. It reiterated the importance of conferring academic ranks through established and rigorous processes that align with national academic standards.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission hereby formally expresses its concern regarding the use of academic titles that have not been duly earned and conferred through a recognised academic process.” GTEC stated.
