Helicopter crash victims’ remains too hot for body bags – Chief of Defence Staff clarifies
Lt. Gen. Agyapong disclosed that although the team had body bags ready, the extreme heat from the wreckage made it impossible to place the remains of the fallen heroes inside them.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has revealed the harrowing challenges faced by the military recovery team at the scene of last Wednesday’s tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several government officials.
Speaking at a press conference on August 13, Lt. Gen. Agyapong disclosed that although the team had body bags ready, the extreme heat from the wreckage made it impossible to place the remains of the fallen heroes inside them.
“Effort with the available and appropriate material we have on the ground. We had some body bags at the scene, but the remains were so heated that it was not conducive for the bags to be used. It was in a thick forest,” he said.
He explained that the team had to make a difficult decision under the circumstances.
“We had the option of leaving our remains there till the following day, and we know what could have happened to the bodies. At the foot of the hill, they met the medical team,” Lt. Gen. Agyapong added.
The Chief of Defence Staff further noted that the retrieval operation was complicated by the crash site’s location in dense forest terrain, which posed logistical difficulties for the team.
