“I will not condone attacks on journalists. Media practitioners must be allowed to carry out their duties,” the President said, addressing a room of editors, reporters, and media stakeholders at the Jubilee House in Accra.

President Mahama assured the media fraternity of his government’s dedication to creating an enabling environment that fosters the growth and independence of the press in Ghana. He described the media as a key pillar in nation-building and emphasized the need for collaboration between state institutions and the media.

In a bid to prevent further incidents of harassment, the President announced that the government would work closely with security agencies to educate officers on the importance of respecting the work of journalists.

“We will engage the security services to ensure their personnel understand the media’s role and cooperate with them in the discharge of their duties,” he added.

The President’s comments followed a question by the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Albert Dwumfuor about increasing incidents of intimidation and assault against journalists. particularly during public events.
