As part of activities marking this year’s World Rabies Day, the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Health Directorate has organized a sensitization exercise on rabies prevention in Navrongo.
The exercise took place along the principal streets of the town and at the Navrongo Animal Market, attracting residents, pet owners, and traders.
During the event, officials from the Directorate urged the public to ensure that all their pets are vaccinated against rabies and to report any suspected cases of rabid dogs, cats, or bats immediately.
Municipal Health Director, Dr. Edmond Mohammed Nelic Nyanwura, underscored the importance of the campaign, stressing that rabies remains one of the deadliest yet preventable diseases.
“Nobody has survived rabies in this world, so once you get rabies, you know you are dead, and any animal that has rabies will die. We want people to report, not to keep the cases, and then it will turn to be rabies.”
Dr. Nyanwura revealed that the municipality recorded 101 cases of animal bites in the first half of 2025 alone, a worrying statistic that highlights the need for sustained vigilance.
“By the end of August, we in our municipality had reported about 101 cases of animal bites, and that is quite high, just next to the Bogatanga municipality.”

He emphasized that rabies is always fatal once symptoms appear, but can be prevented through early reporting and vaccination. He reassured the public that the anti-rabies vaccine is free of charge at all health facilities in the municipality.
“We’ve had positive rabies cases in our municipality of dogs, and if those people who such dogs bit were not given the vaccine, you are sure that before Christmas, they would have died.”

Dr. Nyanwura further disclosed that the anti-rabies vaccine for humans is available for free and readily delivered from the Zipline operates a medical drone distribution center at Vobsi.
He added that the Directorate will extend the sensitization campaign beyond Navrongo to reach other communities in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality through its periodic durbars.
World Rabies Day, observed annually on September 28, aims to raise global awareness about rabies prevention and eliminate human deaths from the disease by 2030.\
