Kassena Nankana Agric Director predicts bumper harvest for maize, sorghum, and millet

Salifu said preliminary observations by the Department of Agriculture point to higher yields for these key staples, though the final results from yield studies and production estimates are yet to be released.

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of Agriculture, Kasim Salifu, has projected a bumper harvest for major food crops such as maize, sorghum, and millet in the municipality as the harvesting season approaches.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday October 9, Salifu said preliminary observations by the Department of Agriculture point to higher yields for these key staples, though the final results from yield studies and production estimates are yet to be released.

“Our observations indicate maize, sorghum, and millet will give us positive results, but currently, our challenge is about rice. Sincerely speaking, across the municipality, when you talk of rain-fed rice, it is not the very best for now.”

He attributed the projected low performance of rain-fed rice to the irregular rainfall pattern experienced during the farming season, which may have affected its growth and yield.

However, he allayed fears of a possible rice shortage, noting that the Tono Irrigation Scheme is expected to supplement production and bridge any potential shortfall.

He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to supporting farmers across the municipality, emphasizing that the Agricultural Directorate remains dedicated to addressing challenges faced by farmers and improving food security in the area.
